William & Henry (Brigantine) logbook, 1788-1790.

The logbook of the brigantine William & Henry details a shipping voyage from Salem, Mass., to Mauritius, Sumatra, Macau, and Guangzhou, China, Dec. 1788-May 1790. The brigantine's owner was possibly William Gray Jr.; the master was Benjamin Hodges. The brigantine's home port was Salem, Mass. The logbook includes notes on animals and birds seen during the journey; astronomy observations of an aurora; poetry and sea songs, plus examples of recreation of the merchant mariners on board and an instance of stealing; a description of a British vessel involved in the slave trade; a waterspout seen during the voyage; and navigation abstracts. During its voyage, the William & Henry spoke the vessels (rigging unknown) Betsey (out of Baltimore), Clinton (out of NY), Hopewell (out of Salem, Mass.), Neptune (out of Philadelphia), and Rambler (out of Beverly), and the brig Lydia out of Salem.
